The Cabrillo Aquarium offers a special night that shows a movie plus you can view their aquarium. Josh was not excited to go but he started to liven up while we toured the aquarium. Lots of things to see although it's not as nice or big as the Long Beach one. There were lots of people there and about 3 showings of the movie which was pretty organized. It was funny as the movie started because if you're a certain age range, you'd recognize the old 50's style educational type film. There really is no need to update it to today's technology but it took Hector and I back to grade school. Oh btw Joshua fell asleep during this but Tyler enjoyed the film.
Afterwards, we are herded outside to the large patio area where we gather into small groups and "hatch" our own baby grunion in baby food jars. You cover the jar with your hand that is filled with sea water, some sand and grunion eggs; Tyler got the honors and shook the bottle around, up n down for a minute then hold it up to the light and you can see little grunion swimming around inside. Cool.
High tide was around 10:30pm and the grunion usually come in about 1-2 hours after that. Lots of people on the beach while aquarium workers try to keep the people from rushing to grab them until the right moment then it's chaotic. Tyler did go in and caught a grunion. Josh and Hector were off somewhere else on the beach catching their own but each boy caught one so that was a good time. :)
We'd do it again but definitely NOT park in the parking lot which takes FOREVER to get out and not go on the night when they give the program since more people show up. Overall, a really good experience.
