Today it might rain in SoCal. Took me by surprise when I saw the weather forecast. At least we managed our outing to the LA County Arboretum on Tuesday which was free admission on 3rd Tuesday of the month. I thought I had been here when I was younger but nothing looked familiar so it was probably some other place...
I will upload those photos tomorrow...
But for now here is the segment; Joshua's Unusual Word of the Day.
Psychokinesis.
Wiki definition. He used the word in playing with their Sonic plushie etc so go figure.

Clamoring
My one blog reader mentioned I haven't blogged in a while...I do have more than one reader (I'm pretty sure) but this particular one gives me instant feedback since I'm married to him. :) So I tartly replied, "Oh? So my audience is clamoring for more cheesey goodness?" He said it wasn't clamoring with which I will leave the following:
clam·or (kl

Comic-con was pretty crazy and we were not even attending!! There are lots of things to experience outside of the venue. We came upon the SEGA sign and found Sonic the Hedgehog. Then the kids went inside and got to try out a new Sonic game on the PS3. They were in heaven! It was super dark in there but there was also the original Alien prop on display and it was large.
Onward we go, tagging people as we walk along the Convention Center, around and behind it to get to the marina. Our goal was to tag 100 people and with the Legend of Zelda concert & Comic-con, we achieved that all in about 3hours.

This is where we sat and got a lot of our tags. There is a group of SD 3DS people that gather and get tagged with each other. It's kind of fun as you collect puzzle pieces to make 3D panels, try to collect hats for your Mii and see what countries and states you get. Joshua seems to tag people in Canada even though I sat right next to him, I didn't get those people. We have tags from Japan, Argentina and Anguilla.
Joshua was so funny and didn't want to budge from his seat. He was exclaiming that this was TOO EASY and when I said this was crazy, he replied yeah, CRAZY AWESOME! This was the highlight of the day, getting all those tags at one place. The concert was really great too. We thought since it combined the videogame soundtrack to the symphony, it would be a good introduction for the kids. There was a Zelda costume contest and raffle too. Hector came down on his motorcycle after work to meet with us but had to ride home to work the next day.
The kids and I stayed in Carlsbad and went to Legoland water park on Friday and the Legoland park on Saturday. The weather was really strange, humid and occasional rain so Josh got cold right away at the water park. I thought that July would warm up a bit but we have to try again another time.

A nice little trip with the kids and now they want to go to Comic-con!! :)

1. A loud outcry; a hubbub.
2. A vehement expression of discontent or protest:

3. A loud sustained noise. See Synonyms at noise.
v. clam·ored, clam·or·ing, clam·ors
v.intr.
1. To make a loud sustained noise or outcry.
2. To make insistent demands or complaints: clamored for tax reforms.
v.tr.
1. To exclaim insistently and noisily: The representatives clamored their disapproval.
2. To influence or force by clamoring: clamored the mayor into resigning.
So I exaggerated a bit...in my mind it was a loud outcry and hubbub. :)
Last Thursday, we headed down to San Diego/Carlsbad because Hector got us tickets to see the Legend of Zelda symphony but we failed to realize that it was during Comic-Con 2012. Hotel prices were very high and traffic in the area was bad but we managed. Got a hotel in Carlsbad, took the trolley to the convention center and had lots of fun watching the activity.

Improvement
Joshua has been in a beginner hockey program near our home and they go through drills to improve skating and puck handling. He typically protests when its time to go but he settles in nicely and does what he is supposed to do.
He is also in a special needs program that is great but they are more relaxed and Josh just usually does his own thing along with all the other kids. It really depends on how many volunteers they have to help and have organized fun drills. That's why I put Josh in a hockey program so he could learn and improve. The special needs program is in Pasadena so it can be a real torture with the drive but I really like their program.
Every July, Pasadena hosts a hockey tournament and they schedule a few games for the special needs kids to play against another special needs program from Panorama City. It's fun and it gives the kids something different to do. The kids from the other team are much older and bigger but no one seems to notice since they are there to play.
I really noticed an improvement in Joshua's play this year. He taps his stick on the ice when he is open for a pass and he is focused on the game. The game ended in a tie 5-5 and then everyone got to take 2 turns in the shootout. Overall, it was a fun game and Josh scored a goal so he was happy.

Josh at warm-ups...

After the first shift, Josh was moved over to the opposing team since some of their players were running late. I don't think he minded and played well for them.

I noticed in several of my photos, Josh tends to play left wing. I guess 10 years of watching hockey will do that to a person.

There were several times where he really battled for the puck .

And get it for a while...

Skating down the left side again but using the back of his blade....

Finally, the handshake line... You can see how much bigger the white team is against our kids and their goalie is massive. He is on the far right and Josh is right in front of him. I'm amazed that Josh and the team were able to score against him. ;)

Some knit tidbits
Got some knitting done and some more in the works....

I finished a Rollercoaster triangle scarf which was very enjoyable to knit. It was my playoff hockey knit which meant it was a simple pattern to memorize and pick up where I left off. It is Noro Taiyo sock yarn which is a blend of cotton, wool and silk. I don't have a lot of use for heavy wool scarves except in the mountains or hockey rink so this will be perfect for those cool days/evenings here.
Now for something different in my knitting world. The blanket. I have been knitting socks for 5+ years so that will accumulate a lot of sock yarn leftovers. I've tried using them up knitting monster socks that randomly uses the yarn into interesting pairs, a scarf and handwarmers. I've looked up sock yarn blanket groups on Ravelry, found some patterns that were interesting and last week decided to take the plunge.
Here is the beginning of the Apple Core blanket.

I knit up an apple core using all those leftovers and sew the cores together to make a blanket. I don't have a lot of bright colors but it'll do. It's kind of fun to see it all come together. Now I have to decide whether to sew them together as I go along or wait until I have enough for the blanket then piece it toegther to be sewn. And figure out what kind of stich I use to attach them together. Hmmm, decisions, decisions.

Another thing...
I don't I mentioned this earlier but Josh got his yellow belt in kenpo. We are so proud of him and wish him continued success in going forward!! Yay Josh!!

If I shared this before, I guess you get another look but I didn't see any mention in my previous posts. :)

Ketchup (Catch Up)
Having the 4th of July totally throws me off but it makes for a much shorter week and here it is Friday already! Yay! This week was low key, mostly knitting and doing things around the house while the kids entertain themselves.
Here are some interesting words that I overheard the 12 yr old and 9 1/2 yr old use playing with their stuffed animals. Okay stuffed animals are not something I imagined my 2 sons would be using but it's their form of action figures because it's videogame type stuffies like Mario, Yoshi etc. The words are doppelganger and insurance. I had to ask about the insurance part and Tyler said that Yoshi wanted to drive somewhere but he didn't have any car insurance. Ahhh, glad to hear that Yoshi is being responsible. :)
Also yesterday, it was Tyler's very first time learning the grill etc so Hector walked him through the marinating and grilling kalbi which Tyler took to right away. He did a great job. Joshua was very impressed and ate everything. So did we....it was a rite of passage. The art of grilling.
And we also have Joshua's 9 1/2 birthday event to share. Yes, 9 and 1/2 half. This goes back to our ultra lame OB/GYN moving the c-section date to 12/27 from my original choice of 1/2 because she wanted to go out of town for the holidays. So Josh has his birthday 2 days after Christmas and we can't have a regular birthday party because friends are out of town or busy because it's the holidays. So H came up with the half birthday idea which places it right in the summertime which works out much better and Josh gets another round of presents.
So Josh chose Sky Zone which is a giant trampoline playground for people of all ages. There is a general jump area, another where you can flip into a huge foam pit, practice your slam dunk or join in a dodgeball game.

Great way to burn off some energy and then load up on some In N Out and shave ice!!

Downtown Day: part 2
The rest of our downtown Los Angeles field trip continues on after the Walt Disney Concert Hall. We all jumped back on the Metro to Union Station to have lunch at Philippes for some French dip sandwiches. Tyler can be pretty picky but he tried mine and really liked it. I got him a plain turkey sandwich. Now we know for next time...

After lunch, it was back on the Metro to the Central Library which is really cool. Lots of stunning artwork and paintings. The kids weren't too happy when they learned we were going to do another tour but this is also self-guided and there are lots of escalators to keep them entertained.

We head out the back to check out the gardens and whaddya know...there's the Bonaventure Hotel!! It was only a block away and it was a welcome distraction for the kids to ride all the elevators while Laura and I got to see more of Los Angeles.

Overall, it was a really great day! The kids had fun and got a bit of culture in them. Of course, we ended it with Slurpees from 7-11....
