Knit update: July edition

Knitters are prepared. We have plenty of yarn to keep us busy probably way after we die. I am not a fast knitter. I prefer to knit with sock yarn mostly so that will extend my knitting process. Sometimes I switch it up and double the sock yarn to get worsted weight which is a bit faster for hats.

This project called for 3 strands of sock yarn so I was down to try it. I have lots of sock yarn leftovers and mini-skeins so I am always looking for projects to make me feel productive and get my yarn stash lower.  I laugh because yarn, in general doesn't weigh much so in the grand scheme probably didn't put much of a dent in my stash.

So the pattern I found is called Scrappy Birthday Cowl. It calls for 3 strands of sock yarn (which can be a little tangled) and lots of bobbles which is a nubbin or boobles (my term) of yarn so it'll just use up more yarn so I was game for this. 

The fun thing with using different strands of yarn, you can achieve some interesting looks depending on our choices. I decided to use a dark, almost black green yarn to be used thoughout the entire cowl and throw in other colors similar or contrasting because I wanted the bobbles to stand out a bit. Overall, the cowl has that dark tone with some pops of color.

This cowl is heavy, way heavier than I thought it would be. Definitely for colder weather than SoCal. I am thinking of gifting this to my SIL who lives in MD.

And here is another cowl but in a single strand of fingering weight which may be okay for California but only for those really cold spells. This cowl hugs the neck so we will see. Also it sits tall (about 14 inches) but can be scrunched down and my neck is not long & elegant enough for this cowl to work for me. This why there is no photo of me wearing it. It really is pretty though. I'll put it in the gift pile for now.

Wolkig cowl is complete!! I am not a fast knitter but have many projects going at once so I can choose. Only 1 row repeat and even I messed that up by k3tog instead of p3tog during the entire pattern. I didn’t even realize my error till I was almost done so I was consistent in my knitting. I’ll have to wait and see if this will be useful for SoCal.

I have a couple more sock yarn projects waiting in the wings, a hat and another cowl. Seriously, I need to stop with the cowls. I do want to start another shawl. I volunteered for a test knit of a hat in worsted weight so I can get that done fairly fast. at the beginning of the year, I gave myself a goal of completing 25 knit projects and currently I am at 11. Hats are the easiest for me to get to my goal but I am trying to challenge myself with bigger projects.

I do want to start another 10-stitch blanket because I heard a little birdie say another baby is on the way. Not me...

Shiny Magikarp

I'm not sure if I mentioned our Pokemon Go fun but this is one of the ways Hector and I spend our time together. We have fun hunting Pokemon and we can get some walking done too.

Hector has been pretty lucky in finding Magikarp at Redondo Beach especially shiny ones. These are really hard to find/catch and he's managed to catch two while I have zero. Sad trombone.

Back in October I set out to knit him a Shiny Magikarp hat using the Fish Hat pattern. Turns out several other knitters have done the same thing which is great for me since they leave notes and links to modifications. 

I mentioned in my last post that I have set goals for myself and decided to add in Hector's hat. There is a WIP (work in progress) category so I can medal in that too!! Win/win. 

It's FINISHED and it's pretty awesome.

Cowl Curling

I've been finding my knitting mojo again which is really nice and relaxing for me.

Another challenge coincides with the Winter Olympics so I listed a cowl and finishing my 10- stitch blanket as my goals. The cowl was finished fairly fast in a couple of days. It's a cowl type that I normally wouldn't consider for myself mostly because of our SoCal weather is not that cold. we usually wear cowls as accessories not practicality. 

My friend Jayna showed me a cowl she bought which is close fitting to her neck yet a lighter yarn with looser stitches to allow air circulation. I searched for something similar in the Ravelry database and found Hallgrimskirkja cowl and paired it with some Noro Taiyo sock yarn. This particular yarn is cotton, wool, silk and nylon blend which will be nice since I didn't want something too scratchy near my neck.

I liked the result so much I casted on for another.

I've already used this for our outings to the Redondo Beach pier. It's been very chilly at night and this cowl is perfect, providing the right amount of warmth for me. I also earned a medal in the Cowl Curling category.

more random things

Think I'll take a jaunt to the post office today.

These awesome shoes are a gift to myself! I saw them and when they went on sale during Black Friday, I grabbed them! 

I wear them in the house for now to stretch them out a bit and to get used to wearing them. I also need to get stronger laces. The ribbon laces are very pretty but not practical for actual laces...

I am still working my way through the Opal sock yarn Advent Calendar. I love seeing each day will produce another little mini skein of sock yarn. I'm trying to keep up with knitting a couple of hexipuffs from each one and it's a challenge but I'm getting more hexipuffs this way for my seat cushions. 

Also, I'm knitting ornaments  from them like little hats, and hopefully socks and sweaters. My plan is to have an ornament for my family members. I better get going!

tis the season

Hope you all are having a great Christmas season and remembering to share the gift of love and compassion.

I've been busy working my side biz while doing all my normal activities and naturally some are getting cut out...well, that just can't happen. I usually knit or paint a little gift for family members so I need to get going. My wrists are not able to handle all the long hours of knitting I used to do but I will try to balance it all.

Shadow has been in-your-face and pet me type of mood so it's sort of funny. When we first got him, he was super skittish and aloof but now almost 2 years later he is the most aggressive about getting his head pets. Shadow will head butt, put his paw on your face or hand in order for you to move that unused hand and pet him! Then when you finally bend to his will, he will make these soft grunts and it racks me up.

Okay, back to knitting... I knit a couple of small things that I think my family will like.

This little cat is adorable. I think I used a smaller weight yarn but pretty much everything is adaptable. 

The best one is my zero calorie donut. Really just the cutest thing. This one made my wrists ache but I plowed through because I wanted it done. Off course I want to knit more in more color combos so I'll have to try.

Latest Knits

This is from last month and I couldn't post it since I didn't want my niece to see it before the baby shower. Her boyfriend really loves owls so I thought this would be perfect for them. It just so happens that my cousin has an Etsy shop called Tilbyen. I ordered the owl bib and blanket. So adorable and my niece/boyfriend love it!!

Unforunately I wasn't able to get photos of it so you'll have to believe me.




Here is a pretty hat with lots of texture to show off the yarn. The pattern is called Petal Showers Hat available on Ravelry.  I have since added a pompom because I think hats look better with a topper of some sort but that's just me.

Baby Gifts

Chez Cheese is busy as usual...hockey playoffs are approaching fast, spring break is also around the corner while we gear up for some fantastic stuff.

My last post mentioned our cats and yarn and I should've known better...we were out of town over Easter weekend and I came home to a mangled knit hat. The kids need to pick up their items and so the cats can't help themselves. SIGH. It was such a cute hat and one of the first projects I knit when I picked it up again after a super long hiatus. I could have tried to fix it since it was just a few snags but the pom pom was destroyed and I just didn't feel like it.

Time to hide my yarn and knits. Over th weekend, cat mangled up my first hat I knit for Tyler in 2006 that got passed to Josh. RIP cute hat.

So I moved on...some family members are having baby girls this summer and that kicked my knitting to another area that becomes almost obsessive in finding the cutest items to knit. 

Remember that half-done sock monkey? Well, it's all finished and looking cute. I even found a doll skirt pattern to make it cuter. 



Once that was done, I  had to find more and boy did I find a treasure trove of cute plushies to knit. I whipped an adorable little owl that I haven't decided who it will go to but I will knit more of them since it uses up leftovers. 



I started another plushie that is OTN (on the needles) and it involves a bit more work but lots of fun stuff to plan. These are so much more fun for me than knitting baby blankets although blankets are super useful.

I think that the ladies in my family or anyone for that matter would love the owls as gifts. What do you think?

Yarn and Cats

A deadly combo to have so much yarn and 2 playful cats in the house but for the most part, there hasn't been any horrible tragedies.

Sometimes I find a random ball of yarn undone and tangled but I think I can limit that to about 5 incidents in the year we've had our cats.

They did do me a favor this week by picking the most ugly yarn that I recycled from a sweater I found in some thrift store years ago and left it on the stairs. Okay, I wasn't planning to knit with it anyway since it was rough, scratchy and would fall apart at the slightest tug so I knit a ball with a tail and used that old crappy yarn as the stuffing. Everybody wins!!

I fired up the camera and came up with photos!!




Shadow in a rare moment of being in the sunlight and still. He has some type of injury in his back legs that flared up this week so he is on house arrest. Hopefully the rest will fix it and he can stay healthy otherwise he needs to see the vet again.






Phil is his usual self. 

Okay, so back to yarn. My mind hasn't been keeping up with the calendar because all of a sudden, a couple of family members are expecting babies. At least I have this spidey sense with my cousin and I texted her if she was having a shower since this is her 2nd baby. She texted back yes, told me the date and the invites are sent out. That day I got my invitation! Freaky, huh? So they live in Arizona and don't need any handknit baby clothes or hats so I try to knit other things like plushies. I knit her a catepiller along with The Hungry Caterpiller book and over the years she has kept the other animals I've knitted her (way before she had babies). A bunny, an armadillo and little cute monsters.

This time I am knitting a sock monkey since it is the Year of the Monkey. I'm about halfway done.




It's looking really cute so far...

And then I began thinking, well I better knit the older brother something to ease the transition of having another little person to their household.

Since he is almost 2 years old, he needs a bigger plush so I found a free pattern called Big Snowy Owl using super bulky yarn. As usual, my wrists started complaining and I realized I would not have enough yarn to finish the actual size. I was using scraps and leftovers so I improvised a little and made the owl smaller. This is probably about 1/2 the size it was supposed to be but still fairly large. It's taller than a 16.9 oz water bottle and it came out so much cuter than I thought it would be. 




I'm planning to knit another one probably using worsted weight yarn for our niece who is expecting a girl in June and both family members are having their showers in April. Eeeek, I've got to get a move on then...

Crank It up

I'm on fi-yaaaaah! But I'm going to slow down a bit to give my wrists a break. 




This is Globular Hat which is another free pattern on Ravelry.  Gotta love those talented people on Rav to come up with some great patterns.

My friend Matt works outside a lot so he always appreciates my hats that I knit for him. I usually knit with acrylic or wool blend but this time I splurged on some Malabrigo Rios for him which is so soft and machine washable. It's hard to see the different tones/shades of colors in this hat but it's really gorgeous. Sort of a dark gray with bronze in it. The pattern has good texture which highlights the yarn too.

I even had enough for some fingerless mitts. 



Here is a better view of the yarn. As a knitter it really helps me keep going when the colors are so interesting. Actually I enjoyed this pattern more than I thought I would,  here in LA area we don't need super cold weather gear but these are perfect for our chilly mornings/nights.  Like I said before, the yarn is so soft that it feels great on the hands.


Monday was a holiday so the kids and I went to the Redondo Beach pier and then we walked to the Hermosa Pier. It was a nice walk while Josh rode his new longboard, Tyler & I discussed the different architecture of the beach houses. 





We couldn't ask for better weather because the next day was foggy/overcast.




This beach shot is at Hermosa and it's deceiving from this angle. We were standing on top of the pier and this is a huge sand berm where people/kids were hanging out on. Kids brought their snow gliders to slide down this sand hill.

From where we were standing, we could have climbed over the railing and stepped onto the sand. Josh wanted to come back with our snow sled. :)

Hats keep on coming

Since I'm on a roll with the hats, here are  some more that I've finished....

A Slouchy beanie pattern inspired by the movie/book The Fault in Our Stars. Free pattern on Ravelry.

I'm using some leftovers trying to make a dent in the pile. Sort of working. Hats don't use up a lot of yarn.

Sanpo hat featuring Totoro...also free on Ravelry. It came out huge even on my big noggin so the verdict isn't fully decided on this to rip it all out or see if I can fit this over Josh's snowboard helmet.

January Hats

This year I'm really trying to work down my yarn stash. I have a couple of projects going but nothing is faster than knitting some hats. We have had some really cold temps here in SoCal so I think hats will be useful this year plus they make great gifts.

In the Puck This group on Ravelry, we have a challenge of knitting 3 hats in January for a hat trick. Not very hard to do since we have an entire month. I have completed 2 already but one doesn't count since its been on the needles for quite a while. No official prizes are offered but its fun to cheer one another on and see all the different hats.






First up is the Garter Ear Flap Hat which is free on Ravelry. Multiple sizes available and this is the toddler size. I think one of my nephews can use this.

Next is The Vermonter...another free pattern on Rav. I've made this several times and it's super fast and easy. I remember knitting this last year and the recipient didn't like the huge pom pom on it so I detached it for her & gave her the pom separate. Then later after she spoke with some others that really supported the pompom, she asked for me to put one back on but she had either thrown away the pom or took it apart. So I didn't have the same yarn and had to use another similar yarn. That's the lesson...RESPECT the POM POM!!! :)

I really should knit one up for me, resisting buying new yarn. Although I did receive a yarn store certificate so technically that's not new if it's a gift. :)





I'm working on finishing up a third hat that I started in December or earlier, so that'll be nice to use up more yarn.

Ashburn

Ack, it's already December! I've done some shopping and we're still decorating the house/tree. After taking a break, this year the Christmas cards and photo calendars are back so that took up a good portion of my time. I guess it seems really hectic in addition to being my mom's assistant and driver. 

I used my anniversary  Amazon gift card to buy an Instant Pot. So far I used it to make mashed potatoes (success) and pinto beans (success). I make beans often and used the stove top method. I would just boil/simmer the heck out of them but using the Instant Pot was like night and day. WOW! I know it's just beans but married to a Hispanic can put some bit of pressure on a girl. ;)  Heh, see what I did  there unknowingly? Pressure ===> Instant Pot = electric pressure cooker. 

Okay, these beans came out really good. I'm no bean expert but after 18 years of marriage and beans, these are GOOD. And it only took about 35 minutes of cooking in the Instant Pot. I didn't have to stir every so often, check the water level or worry about burning the beans. So I'm making more today. No more fuss...I can't wait to make stew and soups.
Mmmm...

So on to the real topic, my Ashburn which is not technically correct since I knit it for someone else. It was a real labor of love and it came out just beautiful. I only had about 12 hours to enjoy it and try to take proper pictures of it before I handed it off. I hope hope hope that the recipient LOVES this to death forever and forever. It was a lot of work for someone I don't even know and I won't do that again. Too much for me.

I plan on knitting myself one next year and picking out the colors will be the most difficult part. :) This ranks right up to Color Affection in use of colors and coziness. 





Here it is laid out on the floor which you can't tell how large it is. It measures over 70 inches along the top edge so it can be a lovely shawl or as I model in the following photos a cozy scarf/bandanna.




The cool feature of this pattern is the texture created in the middle portion. It took the longest but the end result is well worth it. 




A new technique I used on this is the picot bind off. I can't recall doing this on any other project but I may be wrong. I think it adds a nice feminine touch to this. 

The weather is even cooperating so I wasn't sweltering during the photoshoot. Although now I see some strange white flecks in my hair!  Blergh..




And now for my artsy look...It's going to rain a lot tonight so since the Ashburn is gone, I will have to find my Color Affection to cozy up with during the hockey game. :)

Knitted Lace Jewelry Frame

Okay, so now I'm kind of expanding my knitting wings so to speak. I usually like to give knits as gifts and it's nice to know if they're being used or not because I don't want to be that weird person/ family member who is always giving handknits.

I've knit the usual hats, socks, and scarves but I found a cool pattern and hopefully the women in my life will enjoy this as much as I do.




It's an unusual and cool gift IMO if the ladies don't like these, then they can re-gift. I already know of one person in my family who does not want one. The horror!

The frames can be set on a table or hung on the wall. Pretty nifty.

I like this a lot and spent all weekend looking for frames, knitting the pattern and finding the fabric backing. :)




This barely uses any yarn and I like how the frame can totally set the mood.

One last one that will be a birthday gift. It has the funky Instagram filter on it so I will get proper photos of this and the others too.

Free Pattern: Boho Hobo Infinity Scarf

Boho Hobo

How this pattern was discovered... I was stashbusting my leftover balls of yarn knitting a length-wise scarf, I would trim the ends off from the fringe and add those bits to my gallon sized Ziploc bag, I think have trimmings and pieces starting to almost the beginning of my yarn addiction.

I began thinking, what can I do with these little random lengths of yarn? And the Boho Hobo was born!! I began knotting the strands together, mixing colors and weights at will. Everything was included, fingering, DK, sport, worsted and bulky. Nothing was left behind even the crazy novelty yarn I had no clue how to use.

I cast on and in the beginning, it didn't look like much but I persevered. As I was knitting, I'm thinking someone must think this is nice, right? This entire week, I bring my mom to the infusion center for her IV iron therapy. The nurse on Monday sees me knitting on this unknown entity, asks what I'm knitting. I say, I think it may be a scarf but I don't have enough yarn scraps so probably a cowl. The nurse replies, It's pretty.

Aha moment!

I keep knitting until I run out of scraps and then began to make more to add on. The length I stopped at was about 44 inches. Bind off and mattress stitch the ends together and wow! I can't believe how cute it looks.

I am now in the process of cutting up my leftover yarn balls into smaller pieces so I can knit another one.

So if anyone is interested in making their own Boho Hobo, I am posting my notes although it's not set in stone...do whatever you like!

Boho Hobo Infinity Scarf: 

Ingredients: lots of yarn scraps knotted together (this can take the longest so don't be afraid to ask family and friends with finger dexterity to help).

Needles: US size 8 (I knit loosely). Choose a size to get the fabric and drape you desire. 

Gauge: not necessary

Cast on desired # of stitches. I choose 28 stitches which gave me about 6 inches width. 

For each row, slip the 1st stitch purlwise, knit to end of row. Knit all rows to get garter stitch which will be reversible and let the knots fall where they may on either side of fabric. Sometimes the knots will get caught on the loops but just work them through gently.

Continue knitting until desired length. Mine was 44 inches, the length is entirely up to you and/or recipients preference.

Bind off and stitch the ends together.

My ball of knots

August

Summer is flying by much to the kids' dismay but we are enjoying every moment of it. The days seem warmer than usual due to increased humidity so we stay cool inside and then go for nice long walks in the evening. Did you see the supermoon? That was really cool and neat to see at midnight with the kids. We pulled out the binoculars and could see pretty good details. 

I've been knitting too, Christmas is around the corner. I have  several new things to show off.


First up is a nice crescent shaped shawlette/scarf that uses fingering weight yarn. It's called 504 King West and it's free on Ravelry. I am always attempting to use stash yarn which made a little dent. I really like this but these colors are not my taste so I will gift this one.





I found another stashbuster called Bandanna Cowl from Purl SoHo in NYC where I just was a couple of weeks ago. I like how this looks although it may not be used that much here in LA, I think my snowboarder friends will like it's usefulness while boarding on gusty days.


Boot cuffs! A cute accessory that looks like tall thick socks but no! It's an illusion. Girls get it and believe me, actual socks would be too warm. My calves are big so I would use these, I can barely find boots to fit over the calf so sadly these will be gifted to my family/friends with smaller calves. 

To complete my headband theme, I found a cute headband pattern called It's a Cinch. Also free and a quick gift.  This is the first headband which is knit as pattern states. It's pretty wide so I also knit a narrower version. 




I knit these socks last month but had to rip out the toes again because they were too short. I really wanted to keep them. I don't remember if I posted pics of them but here they are. Show-off Stranded Socks. I love the shades of purple. 



Wow, that was a lot more than I realized. I have some WIPs to get to like socks, a shawl, 2 scarves and always, my hexipuff project.

UCLA Baby

Well, we heard of a new addition to our family! They haven't made an official announcement as far I know but they told us the news. So of course, I had to get started on a terrific baby gift. 

Now since I don't knit adult sized sweaters (while I'm typing in 80* weather), I'm all for baby sized sweaters. After that, it's strictly accessories! Side note: in the very beginning of my knitting  adventures, I chose to knit a sweater with the wrong yarn which I completed but it was a total disaster! It was not good.

So anyway, I present the UCLA Baby Sophisticate sweater. Isn't it adorable? I want to knit another one for my cousin but they live in Arizona which might not be all that practical is can be useful when they visit Cali. What the heck~!
I'm going to knit them one too anyway! Thinking a dark gray or a blue...



Lucky for me (and them) I had the right colors and enough to produce this cute sweater....it just feels awesome to have the perfect yarn in your stash. I also happened to have the right buttons although only 2 of each style. I think it adds some whimsy.








  I get to knit sweet, adorable baby things for 2 babies. Oh the possibilities!!

Baby Gifts

My cousin, Hannah is expecting her first baby at the end of September. Over the years, she has received various knit stuffed items ie. armadillo, bunny and monster. She will be putting them in the baby's room so that got me thinking I should do another search. Boy, my library has increased by at least 5 more stuffies.

I'm always trying to use up stash yarn and this Hungry Caterpillar is a prime example. I knit this in 2 days and used a variegated blue yarn for the body. The felt eyes don't match exactly like the book but that's okay. It sure does capture the essence of the book's version and that's fine with me. A very cute rendition and I will be knitting more if I need a baby gift.







So that got me thinking since the book is the hungry caterpillar maybe I can find a pattern for some fruit. Well, this apple is perfect. My first attempt I read a line wrong and had way too many stitches so I ripped it all out and began over. Much better.



So adorable. If I had  found this earlier, it would have been the perfect gift for the kids' teachers over the years. :)




Look how great it fits in Josh's hand. It's actually apple sized. He was laying on the ground watching TV so I had him hold it and it reminds me of Snow White after she bit into the apple. So now this part is complete with the apple and the hungry caterpillar.

Show and Tell

I have some pretty knits to show off today. Actually some have been done for a while but I've taken photos now so I can share.

We had a heat wave 2 weeks back which sucked the life out of everyone and now we are to our usual May gray/June gloom. I like the cool weather, personally.

Okay, here are my Smaug socks which I may have shown off before but I took a couple more photos of me wearing them which displays the stitches off better. Yes, the socks are really bright and my legs are even brighter.

These are kind of snug on me so I will gift them to my niece who is graduating high school and going off to school in Chicago where she will need some more warm accessories. 

Another pair of socks that are plain vanilla socks because look at how crazy colorful/bright the yarn is. Lots of knitters refer to this kind of colorful yarn as clown barf. Descriptive, isn't it? With all the socks I knit with intricate patterns/textures, I do love me some plain socks. A ribbed leg for lots of stretch will fit a variety of people.

These are just a tad long for me so I will gift them to a dear friend. I know she will appreciate the wild colors.

I also finally finished a baby blanket. I targeted the future dad since he is a USC grad and he can avoid the typical cutsey factor. This can be very tedious and hard for me to complete but I gave myself enough time and slogged along. The finished result is great so if I do attempt another blanket, this pattern is the perfect  one to use up those leftovers I save up. I'm sure I can find another pregnant friend somewhere.


Last, but not least are some cute coasters. The pattern is called Drip Coasters (free on Rav) and another great way to use up leftovers; this time with sock yarn.



  I think these will a nice end of the year gift to Joshua's teacher.
