Canon A-1: Mammoth and Bishop

I had a couple of rolls developed from our trip to Mammoth during spring break.

I'm enjoying the process of taking my time, composing and focusing. It is very different than a digital camera, oranges and bananas. :)

I shot a roll at Fossil Falls but figured out that I didn't load the film correctly so those shots are non-existent. I have to make sure the film loads properly and that solves that.

I even learned by Googling how to retrieve the film leader from the rolled up film so I can use it and not have it wasted. I realized the film wasn't used after I rolled it up or at least I think so. We'll see because that roll is in the camera now so I either have pictures on there or some double exposures. Oh well, that's half the fun.

I challenged myself and brought on the film camera too. The weather was gorgeous and mild weather during the day & chilly temps at night.

Some the photos are from Laws Museum just outside of Bishop, CA. There is a railroad station, little town and mining area.

San Gabriel mountains

I posted this way back in November, and today I got some film back from that time. Note: that is a definite drawback to film. Also this is using the Minolta Hi-matic that was discovered in my MIL' s things when she passed. It is very nice to open that envelope  and see what is inside!

I do enjoy the rangefinder but I have fallen in love with the Canon A-1 (to be posted later). The Hi-matic is limited in what it can do plus the battery drainage is another issue. The pictures here are okay for the most part and I scanned what I liked the best.

Hazy LA Basin

There's this nice dreamy quality to my first pic and the Los Angeles haze/smog also helps. :) I just noticed that there is a couple of dust flecks in the far left middle. I'll have to see if that's something I can clean off.

Here the light is totally different and I'm slightly off on the scan.

I really love the blue sky.

Pretty amazing for a 40 year old camera. I'm more amazed that the photos are level. When I shoot digital, I'm usually tilted in one direction or another that I have to correct. :)

Fuji film set

Now here is the film that wasn't developed that we found one day cleaning out junk.

So I was pleasantly surprised to see some picture of the kids & us probably in 2004. The kids are both little with baby faces. :)

Canon A-1: first batch

Finally got my first roll of film developed using my Canon A-1. Definitely a learning curve but the pics that are focused are really nice. I even tried a couple of double exposures. :)

I already notice that I have to take my time to compose, focus and shoot. A tad different than than the DSLR which I still do those steps but I need to double check myself with film. So action shots and candids are not on the agenda yet.

Tyler
Tyler doesn't have as much patience with me & a camera so this is the best I have of him on this roll.

Tyler double exposed.

Or maybe this one where he is doing his best impression of a flower.

Joshua has more patience and more expressions...he is my muse. :)

So those are my best from this roll although I did find & develop another roll from 2003-04 so I'll scan those later...

Beach Film

Like I said before, I shot a roll of film at the beach today and here are some of the shots. I have a Yashica FR-2 which is a SLR camera and from the photos I got back, I have some learning to do. :)

About half are in focus while the other half is not which I need to figure out. The film loaded up fine but the frame number indicator is stuck so I just have to keep shooting until the end.
When I do have the shot in focus, the image is sharp and the colors are true. I have to put more of the Fuji Superia film on order although I will try some other brands to get a feel for them.

So here are some of my best and worst shots from yesterday...

Escape to the sea
The water was nice and warm. It was so relaxing listening to the waves crash.

Here is an example of a blurry action shot...

Overall, I'm happy with the results. I need to focus on the technical aspects of shooting and can only hope to get better...

Film Days

Tyler on crazy hair day.
Yeah, remember film?? A while back we went through some boxes and Hector pulled out my 35mm SLR and little Fuji camera. I replaced the batteries and got the film out then went to Costco which surprisingly still processes film.

And look pictures from 2005!!

It must be my birthday since I'm the only one that could possibly be  39 yrs old.
Joshua being cute...
I'm gonna still shoot film every so often since it's lots of fun to see what you will get. I think the kids are somewhat confused by film asking where I found these photos. And Josh says he remembers that from like 2 years ago. No, they're from 2005.

The old film cameras I inheritied from Lita are getting their seals replaced so I can experiment with them and the film I ran through it, about half turned out so hopefully the new seals will solve the problem and I can show you more later on.
