Yesterday we managed to find the last movie theatre showing Speed Racer within a 20 mile radius which turns out to be in Lakewood. We packed up the kids and arrived about 15 minutes before the show began with our popcorn and sodas ready. Pretty soon a man and his young son arrived too making small talk about how this was their 3rd time seeing the movie and to forget what the critics said/wrote. We laughed and said we were prepared since the kids wanted to watch it liked forever (cough Josh).
When the movie started, Josh was already glued to the screen. The movie is a vibrant colorful fantasy world and the race scenes are pretty cool. At first some of the racing scenes look like Hot Wheel cars digitally imposed on the track but the action is fast and exciting. My goodness, Joshua was so excited and as soon as he saw race cars he'd exclaim,"Look, there's the Mach 4!" It would take me a few seconds to really pinpoint the car in the fast action but yep, he was right. In fact, Josh correctly identified all of the cars in just a few seconds of them showing up on screen. It was pretty amazing since it took us several more after that to agree. It must be easier for him since he has practically all of the Hot Wheels Speed Racer set.
The movie is pretty long but the kids held up well. Josh got a little ansy with the dialogue/plot between races but he really enjoyed the film. Overall, the movie was not bad. I heard the movie bombed which it probably didn't make the money back that it cost to film but it was a very enjoyable movie. Even the storyline was fine. I was expecting much worse and this movie didn't suck. Hey, we saw Nacho Libre and that movies sicked big time.
Well, we finally accomplished seeing Speed Racer and we recommend it...especially Josh.
